I’ve been running regularly now for about five years; I started when I was trying to pass the minimum skills requirement to play roller derby games. And now I am a big advocate that cross-training and passing that test go hand in hand. Well, since then, I’ve quit actively playing roller derby and have focused on running, and now yoga. And in the past few years, I’ve run countless 5k races, 10k races, and a few half marathons. I’ve not run a full marathon yet, even though I keep talking about it. I promise it is coming.
For a while now, I’ve had this un-sort of spoken goal in mind that I was going to get a 5k in under 30 minutes. And holy cow, I’ve done it. Getting this particular 5k personal record was something I had to push for.
I can’t even lie that I had been super down about running and not even sure why I was continuing to run. But the truth is, making that goal has pumped me and reignited some of my personal goals. For example, I am going to complete a marathon sooner than later now and start that training process.
How I accomplished my 5k in under 30 goal and got my 5k personal record!
- Cross-training – for a long time, I was just running only. I seriously do not think that helps anyone improve their performance. It honestly always felt like I was in a rut when I only ran. I’ve started using the elliptical and lifting weights a few times a week. My core strength and stability has greatly improved as well as my speed and of course endurance.
- Yoga – I’ve been training the last few months in a YTT 200 class with the goal of teaching yoga. Being flexible and making myself strong with yoga has made my running one hundred times better. Also, the benefits of breathing through asanas has made my running so much better. It helps me manage my breathing better, and that has always been a huge struggle for me. I’ve been none subconsciously hold my breath when I do different endurance exercises.
All in all I am super proud of this PR, personally I don’t think it is too shabby for a 40-year-old mom. Next on my list is my 10k in under an hour, and of course that elusive marathon.
I will be sure to share more about my goal progression and of course a lot of Yoga for Runners! And please be sure to follow any more of my 5k personal records or more!
